During the photography lessons, we were told that the maximum range black-white one can 'record' without losing (too many) details is about 6 stops. This one was shot with my old Canon 350D. The Canon 40D uses 14bit conversion, which allows to have more details over the complete range (Thanks to Thomas for the remark). In the 2nd picture (the unprocessed), you see the sun fully shining on the childs cheek and some dark zones elsewhere.

As you have noticed from my previous posts, I like to play around with Lightroom's settings. The final result is at the top. Vignetting is very useful here to mask out the the top left and top right.
